Northern France / Carnaval de Dunkerque
The ‘Carnaval de Dunkerque’ is a 2 to 3 months-long yearly carnival close to my place in the North of France. This carnival is an institution in our region. Very festive, popular, colorful and low-profile. Special.
The origins of carnival Dunkirk back to the early seventeenth century. The boat-owners offered to fishermen, before leaving for six months of cod fishing in Iceland, a meal and a party (the “Foye”), and half of their pay. Many of them did not return to touch the other half (lost at sea, sinking, …) leaving women and children without anything.
